Arthur Fery is through to the Wimbledon fourth round after defeating Zizou Bergs 2-6 7-5 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-5). The British wildcard needed four hours and 39 minutes, while receiving treatment for three nosebleeds during the match.
The result keeps British singles interest alive and marks a significant breakthrough for Fery, who began the tournament outside the top 100 and is now set to enter that group for the first time. He is also the first male British wildcard to reach this stage at Wimbledon since Andrew Foster in 1993.
Bergs controlled large portions of the match with aggressive hitting and touch, but Fery repeatedly recovered from difficult positions, including from 4-1 down in the final set. The Court 18 crowd became a major part of the occasion, with Fery having asked to play there after his previous win on the same court.
Fery’s next test is against Grigor Dimitrov, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. His run has already secured £300,000 in prize money, but the bigger story is how a wildcard has turned a demanding draw into one of the home stories of the tournament.
