Folarin Balogun is unavailable for the United States’ World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium after receiving a one-match suspension. If the USMNT advances, he would be eligible to return for the quarterfinals.
Balogun had a central role in the Bosnia-Herzegovina match before his dismissal, scoring the opening goal in the 45th minute and then being sent off in the 64th for a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. The U.S. still held on with 10 men and extended its lead through Malik Tillman’s 82nd-minute direct free kick.
The forward said the aftermath has been emotionally difficult, while also stressing that he wants to help the squad from the sidelines. He felt the incident should have been viewed with more context and said he believed a yellow card would have been more appropriate, but also emphasized moving attention toward Belgium.
Balogun also pointed to the importance of respect after the final whistle, including his decision to acknowledge the referee despite disagreeing with the call. Elsewhere in the squad, Cristian Roldan continued individual work while recovering from a quadriceps issue, and Mark McKenzie returned to full training after foot irritation kept him out of the Bosnia roster.
