Jamie Carragher believes England’s right-back uncertainty before the Mexico match is a problem created by Thomas Tuchel’s earlier selection decisions. His main concern is that Declan Rice should not be moved out of midfield to solve it.
According to the Sky Sports analysis, Reece James and Jarell Quansah are major doubts, while Tino Livramento’s injury led to Trevoh Chalobah being called up. Carragher questioned that move because Chalobah is not viewed as a natural right-back, leaving Tuchel short of specialist cover after Djed Spence struggled against DR Congo.
Carragher’s alternative would be to use Ezri Konsa on the right side of defence and bring John Stones into central defence alongside Marc Guehi. He argued that England also need Rice’s presence in midfield, particularly after concerns about how easily opponents reached the back line during spells of the DR Congo game.
The debate is not limited to defence. Carragher also highlighted an ongoing winger question after Anthony Gordon came off the bench to assist both Harry Kane goals in the 2-1 win over DR Congo, while Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke had started before being replaced by Gordon and Bukayo Saka.
