DeMar DeRozan is now a free agent after the Sacramento Kings waived him. The move ends his short stint with the team and puts one of the NBA’s most established veteran scorers back on the market.
The decision is tied closely to Sacramento’s roster and cap direction. DeRozan had $10 million guaranteed on a deal worth about $25.7 million for next season, and the Kings still have until the end of August to decide whether to spread that remaining amount across three seasons for cap purposes.
Even as he approaches his 37th birthday in August, DeRozan remained productive for Sacramento, averaging 18.4 points while shooting close to 50%. His durability also remains part of his value, with the report noting he missed only five games last season and has reached at least 70 appearances in each of the past five seasons.
The market for DeRozan could become an important subplot of free agency, though reported interest from contenders and the Lakers’ lack of expected involvement are based on unnamed sourcing and should be treated cautiously until teams act publicly. For Sacramento, the move further signals a shift away from the veteran core it assembled after acquiring DeRozan from Chicago and later reuniting him with Zach LaVine.
