Novak Djokovic is through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after beating qualifier Roman Safiullin 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 3-6 6-3. The result gave Djokovic his 106th men’s singles win at Wimbledon, moving him beyond Roger Federer’s previous mark.
The match was not routine. Safiullin, ranked 132nd, pushed Djokovic into a first-set tie-break, later took the third set, and needed treatment for a left-leg issue during the contest. Djokovic also showed visible frustration, received a warning for an audible obscenity, and later acknowledged that he had struggled to keep his emotions contained.
Djokovic’s record now sits behind Martina Navratilova’s overall Wimbledon total of 120 match wins. He is also still chasing more history at this year’s event, including a potential eighth men’s Wimbledon title and a 25th major singles title.
Next up for Djokovic is a quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Elsewhere in the draw, world number one Jannik Sinner continued his title defence by beating Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets and will face Jan-Lennard Struff in the last eight.
