Egypt are through after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. The result gives Egypt their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.
Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead in the 13th minute, but Australia drew level through a Mohamed Hany own goal. Hany’s deflection was reported as the 13th own goal of this World Cup, surpassing the previous tournament record from 2018.
The shootout turned on Egypt’s composure. Mohamed Salah converted with a chipped effort, Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty, and Australia failed to convert through Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington.
Australia also made a major late call by replacing Patrick Beach with Mathew Ryan just before penalties. The decision will be a central talking point, especially because Beach had made several saves and later indicated he had not been expecting the change.
Egypt now wait for the winner of Argentina against Cape Verde, while Australia’s search for a first World Cup knockout win continues.
