FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into incidents after Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina. The case could lead to bans for Argentina personnel, but no final disciplinary outcome has been announced.
The inquiry follows a tense end to the final, including post-whistle confrontations involving Argentina players. Leandro Paredes was shown a red card by referee Slavko Vincic after the match, while Enzo Fernández had already been sent off late in normal time; three other Argentina players and head coach Lionel Scaloni were also booked.
FIFA said its Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor under article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code to examine possible breaches. Some of the alleged conduct remains described as apparent from the reported scenes, so editors should treat those details as subject to formal review rather than settled findings.
The governing body is also looking at Argentina’s celebrations after their semi-final win over England, when players were reported to have displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”. Because FIFA bars political statements by teams or players, that separate matter may also carry disciplinary consequences.
