Cody Gakpo is in strong form for the Netherlands, yet his Liverpool future is less straightforward because the club have added Victor Munoz and are linked with further attacking reinforcements. The immediate issue is not whether Gakpo has quality, but where he fits in a reshaped forward line.
The contrast is clear: Gakpo scored twice against Sweden and has a strong international record, while his Liverpool output dropped last season from 18 goals and seven assists in 2024-25 to nine goals and six assists in 2025-26. He remains a proven Premier League attacker, has reached 50 Liverpool goals, and can play from the left or centrally.
Liverpool’s squad planning complicates the picture. Munoz has arrived from Osasuna, interest in Yan Diomande is reported, and other attacking options such as Florian Wirtz and Rio Ngumoha could affect minutes on the left. Gakpo’s partnership with Milos Kerkez is also part of the tactical question, especially as Liverpool look for more fluency from that side.
For now, the strongest case for keeping Gakpo is his reliability in a squad that may need stability while new signings adapt. But with Tottenham and other clubs reportedly watching the situation, Liverpool’s decision may come down to whether they value his versatility more than the potential transfer return.
