Heaps makes instant impact as Denver edges Portland

Denver Summit FC beat the Portland Thorns 2-1, with Lindsey Heaps marking her club debut as captain and setting up the late winning goal. The result moved the expansion side within one point of the playoff line near the season’s halfway stage.

Portland went ahead in the 25th minute through Sophia Wilson’s penalty, but Denver responded deep into first-half stoppage time when Janine Sonis’ delivery found the net at the back post. Heaps had already been close to scoring before the break, with multiple close-range chances kept out.

The decisive moment came in the 86th minute, when Natalie Means’ effort from the right side of the box beat Mackenzie Arnold after Heaps was credited with the assist. The match was played before an announced sellout crowd of 12,372 at Centennial Stadium, Denver’s temporary home while the club waits for its permanent venue.

For Heaps, the night carried added weight: it was her first NWSL appearance since 2021 and a home-state return after spells with Portland, Paris Saint-Germain and OL Lyonnes. For Denver, the bigger question is whether her arrival can turn a promising expansion season into a playoff push.
