Harry Kane has drawn level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals after scoring twice in England’s 4-2 Group L win over Croatia in Dallas. Lineker responded by saying he now regards the England captain as the finest striker the country has produced.
Kane, 32, put England ahead from a retaken penalty and later restored the lead with a header shortly before half-time. The Bayern Munich forward now has 81 goals in 115 England appearances and remains the national team’s all-time leading scorer.
Lineker’s own 10 World Cup goals came across the 1986 and 1990 tournaments, and he praised Kane’s broader contribution beyond finishing. Alan Shearer suggested Kane is close to moving clear of Lineker’s mark, while Harry Maguire also highlighted Kane’s quality and leadership.
The debate now shifts from records to legacy. With England due to face Ghana next on 23 June, Kane has an immediate chance to take sole ownership of the England World Cup scoring record and strengthen the case being made for him.
