Meituan reportedly gave financial support to the family of Jin Xiaowu and bought them a car after the 20-year-old delivery rider died helping rescue a father and son from a river in Guizhou on May 27.
According to the source report, a child entered danger near a riverbank and his father tried to help, but both were carried into deeper water by the current. Jin, his colleague Wang Fangyang, and two other men joined the rescue effort and helped get the pair to safety, but Jin was later swept away and his body was recovered that night.
The story drew attention across Chinese social media, where many users praised Jin’s actions and mourned his death. The report says Jin had been hoping to save enough money to buy his father a vehicle, a wish Meituan later acted on by providing 100,000 yuan in consolation money and purchasing a car for the family.
Local officials reportedly nominated Jin and the other rescuers for bravery awards, while villagers gathered to say farewell at his burial. For editors and community members, the story raises broader questions about how platform companies, local authorities, and the public should support families after acts of civilian heroism.
