Julian Nagelsmann is no longer Germany head coach after the national team’s World Cup exit against Paraguay. Germany went out in the round of 32 following a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat, and the DFB is now preparing to approach Jürgen Klopp about the role.
The decision ends Nagelsmann’s tenure despite his contract having been extended through Euro 2028 earlier in 2025. He had taken over from Hansi Flick in 2023 and guided Germany to the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, but another early World Cup departure has intensified scrutiny on the direction of the national team.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf acknowledged Nagelsmann’s work and praised his commitment in the federation’s statement. The same statement indicated that Klopp has shown broad openness to the job, but the process remains at the talks stage rather than a confirmed appointment.
Klopp has not managed a team since leaving Liverpool in 2024 and has since worked as Red Bull’s Head of Soccer, while also appearing as a World Cup analyst for Magenta TV. His own comments after Germany’s elimination suggested caution, emphasizing that the immediate focus should be on the team’s exit rather than his future.
