Norris on pole in Hungary, but McLaren still has race-day questions

Lando Norris will start the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole after McLaren’s upgraded car delivered its strongest qualifying result of the year. The position gives him a clear chance at a first win of the season, though he has warned that qualifying pace alone will not be enough.

McLaren’s weekend has been framed by signs of progress after a difficult start to the current regulation cycle. The team’s first major upgrade since Miami appears to have helped Norris move ahead of rivals who were expected to be strong at the Hungaroring, especially Ferrari on a circuit where cornering performance matters heavily.

Hamilton’s session turned sharply after he failed to improve on his final qualifying lap and was then penalised three grid places for impeding Oscar Piastri. Ferrari accepted responsibility for not alerting him in time, while Hamilton later expressed frustration about another setback in a run of recent penalties.

The race may hinge on the opening phase, with overtaking expected to be difficult in Hungary. Norris has track position, Charles Leclerc is viewed as a major threat, and the penalties for Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli give the front row some breathing room.

Further back, Aston Martin also found encouragement from a large upgrade package. Fernando Alonso advanced beyond the first qualifying segment for the first time this season and will start 16th, a modest position but an important sign that the team may finally have a clearer development direction.
