Reece James is an injury concern for England ahead of Saturday’s World Cup game against Panama after complaining of hamstring tightness. The right-back is being assessed, and Thomas Tuchel is not expected to take unnecessary risks with him given his recent injury history.
The issue matters because England are already short of right-back cover after Tino Livramento left the squad with a calf injury. If James is not used, Ezri Konsa could be shifted across from centre-back, while Jarell Quansah and Djed Spence are also listed as options; Trevoh Chalobah has already been called up following Livramento’s exit.
Declan Rice’s condition is also being monitored, and Kobbie Mainoo could come into the side if Rice is rested. Tuchel is balancing the need for continuity with the practical reality that England have fitness questions in several areas before their final group match.
Bukayo Saka may be closer to a start after two substitute appearances, but Tuchel has pushed back against the idea that one returning attacker can fix England’s problems alone. England remain top of the group on goal difference from Ghana, yet their attacking performance against Ghana has left selection and rhythm as key talking points before Panama.
