England’s preparations for their World Cup last-32 tie against DR Congo have been complicated by Jarell Quansah and Reece James missing training. The absences leave the right-back position uncertain before Wednesday’s knockout match.
Quansah was forced off with a twisted ankle during England’s 2-0 win over Panama, with Djed Spence replacing him. James had already been sidelined by a hamstring problem picked up in the goalless draw with Ghana, and he has not yet returned to training.
The situation adds focus to Thomas Tuchel’s squad balance. Tino Livramento withdrew before the tournament with a calf issue and Trevoh Chalobah was called up, though Tuchel has described Chalobah as more of a central defensive option.
Spence may be the most direct solution after covering both full-back roles during the tournament, while Ezri Konsa is another possible option given his recent importance under Tuchel. Any final call should depend on fitness checks and how much defensive security England want against DR Congo.
