Saka’s hat-trick gives Tuchel a fresh England selection question

Bukayo Saka made the strongest possible case for his England place by scoring a hat-trick in the 6-4 World Cup third-place play-off win over France. His performance came days after he was left unused during the semi-final defeat by Argentina.

The contrast has put Thomas Tuchel’s decision back under the spotlight. Saka had been fit enough to be on the bench against Argentina, but Tuchel started Morgan Rogers on the right, and Rogers did contribute by setting up Anthony Gordon’s goal before England lost 2-1 late on.

Tuchel’s explanation centres on both tactics and player management. Saka entered the tournament with an Achilles issue, started only three of England’s eight matches, and had his minutes controlled throughout, while Tuchel has maintained that the Arsenal winger remains central to his plans.

Even with that context, Saka’s numbers are difficult to ignore: three goals and three assists in 357 minutes, plus a place alongside Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker and Harry Kane as England World Cup hat-trick scorers. The third-place match cannot change the semi-final, but it does underline how costly every selection call can feel at this level.
