Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place in Vancouver, earning the country's first win at a World Cup. Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead in the 67th minute before Trézéguet added a late third goal.
New Zealand struck first through Finn Surman, who headed in from a Tim Payne corner in the 15th minute. Egypt responded after halftime when Mostafa Zico equalized with a header in the 58th minute, setting up Salah's decisive contribution nine minutes later.
Salah's goal was listed as his 68th for Egypt, leaving him one short of Hossam Hassan's national-team record. The match also included a concern for Egypt after Hamdy Fathy was substituted late in the first half following an apparent off-ball injury.
The result moved Egypt to the top of Group G, though advancement was not yet secure. Their next match against Iran in Seattle was described as decisive, with Egypt needing at least a draw to reach the knockout stage, while New Zealand were set to face Belgium.
