Scotland lost 3-0 to Brazil in their final Group C match, leaving their World Cup knockout hopes in serious doubt. Steve Clarke, Andy Robertson and John McGinn all suggested after the game that progression now looks unlikely.
Brazil did the damage through two goals from Vinicius Junior and one from Matheus Cunha, a result that pushed Scotland’s goal difference to minus three. Scotland had already secured third place in the group, with Haiti eliminated, but the size of the defeat may prove costly in the ranking of third-place teams.
Under the tournament format, eight of the 12 third-place sides advance to the round of 32. Scotland were listed sixth among those teams after the Brazil match, but several group games were still to be played, meaning their position could change quickly.
The post-match mood was bleak. Clarke pointed to avoidable errors and admitted he thought Scotland were heading home, while Robertson said the squad had not wanted to rely on favours from elsewhere. McGinn also described qualification as unlikely, though not yet impossible.
For editors, the key angle is less about a confirmed elimination and more about the uncertainty: Scotland’s campaign is now dependent on other results after a night when mistakes against elite opposition were punished heavily.
