Belgium advanced to the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic extra-time comeback against Senegal, sealed by Youri Tielemans’ penalty at 124:44. The spot-kick followed a video review of contact involving Lamine Camara and Tielemans, leaving Senegal frustrated at the finish.
Senegal had looked in control after Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr put them 2-0 ahead, while Belgium needed Thibaut Courtois to prevent the deficit from growing. Romelu Lukaku’s 86th-minute goal changed the momentum before Tielemans headed Belgium level late in normal time.
Rudi Garcia’s substitutions were central to Belgium’s recovery, with Lukaku, Dodi Lukébakio and Nico Raskin all part of the shift in rhythm after the break. Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku were withdrawn as Belgium searched for a different route back into the match.
The ending will remain the main talking point because the decisive penalty came so late and after a disputed review. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw did not openly attack the officiating afterward, but the defeat was especially harsh given how close his side had come to eliminating Belgium.
