Thomas Tuchel has urged England to remain calm ahead of their World Cup round-of-16 match against Mexico, despite a complicated build-up in Mexico City. The England head coach said the squad should focus on controllable details rather than outside noise around the fixture.

England arrived in the Mexican capital on Friday after FIFA had considered, but did not proceed with, moving the kickoff earlier because of safety and weather concerns. The Football Association also brought the squad in a day earlier than usual to give players a first experience of conditions at around 2,240 metres above sea level.

Tuchel acknowledged that the altitude was noticeable, including during the team’s hotel stay and the opening stages of training at Pumas UNAM’s complex. He suggested the first 15 to 20 minutes could be especially demanding, with Mexico expected to start strongly at home.

Security around England’s hotel is another part of the backdrop, particularly after Ecuador previously complained to FIFA about disruption before facing Mexico. Tuchel said England had not experienced problems so far and framed the challenge as one of staying relaxed, respectful and ready for a difficult knockout environment.
