Folarin Balogun is available for the United States’ last-16 match against Belgium after his one-match suspension was put on hold until after the World Cup. The decision followed his red card in the USMNT’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
According to The Guardian, Donald Trump made calls to FIFA president Gianni Infantino while US Soccer was seeking a way to delay the ban. FIFA has pointed to its disciplinary rules as the basis for the decision and has said its process cannot be influenced by outside pressure.
The ruling has split reaction around the tournament. Mauricio Pochettino welcomed the forward’s availability, while Belgium coach Rudi Garcia was angered and Belgium’s federation is reportedly examining possible legal routes. Norway coach Ståle Solbakken also criticised FIFA’s move, arguing it could cloud any US victory.
For the USMNT, the football issue is straightforward: Balogun has been a key player and his return strengthens the team. The wider concern is reputational, because a disciplinary reprieve linked in reporting to political pressure risks shifting the story from the players’ performances to questions about fairness and governance.
