England are through to the World Cup quarterfinals after a 3-2 win over Mexico at Estadio Azteca. Jude Bellingham scored twice, Harry Kane added a penalty, and England held on after Jarell Quansah’s second-half red card.
The match was delayed by lightning before an 80,824 crowd, but once it began England struck quickly in the first half. Bellingham twice arrived in decisive areas to turn England control into a two-goal lead, before Julián Quiñones brought Mexico back into the contest.
Quansah’s dismissal after a VAR review changed the shape of the night, yet England responded with Kane’s 60th-minute penalty. Mexico pushed again through Raúl Jiménez, who converted from the spot and repeatedly tested Jordan Pickford, but England managed the final stages and 11 minutes of added time.
The result sends England to Miami for a quarterfinal against Norway, though the right-back situation now looks more complicated with Quansah suspended. For Mexico, the home crowd helped drive a late surge, but the comeback fell short in one of the tournament’s most intense knockout matches so far.
