The Boston Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN, receiving draft compensation while also taking on Paul George in the deal. The reported package has drawn surprise around the NBA because Brown remains a five-time All-Star coming off one of his strongest statistical seasons.
ESPN’s reporting says Boston’s return included one unprotected first-round pick, another first-round pick or swap depending on where it lands, and two second-round picks. George, described in the report as 36 years old with two years and $110.7 million left on his contract, was also part of the transaction.
The debate around Brown’s value is more complicated than his box-score production. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists last season and finished sixth in MVP voting, but ESPN cited league executives who believe analytics, contract size and fit concerns cooled the market.
The report also says Boston had explored a bigger swing involving Giannis Antetokounmpo before moving Brown to a division rival. For editors and fans, the key question is whether this was a necessary reset by the Celtics or a rushed move that handed Philadelphia a star at a discount.
