Jordan Henderson has been taken to hospital after injuring his wrist during England’s celebrations following their 3-2 World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico. England manager Thomas Tuchel said the problem appeared serious, but no formal medical diagnosis has been reported.
The incident happened at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where Henderson appeared to fall awkwardly from advertising hoardings after the match. He was later seen leaving the pitch on a stretcher and is being accompanied by a member of England’s support staff rather than travelling back with the team on Monday.
Henderson, now 36 and playing for Brentford, has had only a brief role at this tournament, with his minutes limited to a late appearance in the group-stage win over Panama. Even so, his experience has been part of England’s squad balance, and any absence would add to Tuchel’s selection concerns.
England’s next test is a quarter-final against Norway in Miami on Saturday at 22:00 BST. Reece James has already been dealing with a hamstring issue, while Jarell Quansah is unavailable after his red card against Mexico, leaving England with fresh questions over depth as the tournament reaches its decisive phase.
