Andy Farrell has indicated that James Lowe is not likely to play for Ireland while he is based in Japan, although the Ireland head coach has left open a narrow possibility of a return for the 2027 World Cup. Lowe’s departure from Leinster puts him outside the usual selection pathway for Ireland internationals.
Lowe, 33, left Leinster after the 2025-26 season when a new contract was not agreed. He has been strongly linked with Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath, but the report does not state that the move has been formally completed.
The situation tests Ireland’s long-standing preference for selecting players attached to one of the four provinces. Farrell’s comments suggest the immediate focus is on developing alternatives, with Jamie Osborne set to wear the number 11 shirt against Australia in Sydney while several wing options are unavailable through injury.
Lowe has been an important figure during Farrell’s Ireland tenure, which has included two Six Nations titles and the 2023 Grand Slam. For now, Ireland appear to be moving into their July fixtures against Australia, Japan and New Zealand with one eye on succession planning before the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
