Jamie George has backed England’s replacement forwards to make a decisive late contribution against South Africa, despite several of them having limited Test experience. The focus is on whether England’s bench can hold up in the final quarter in Johannesburg against the reigning world champions.
Beno Obano, Asher Opoku-Fordjour, Henry Pollock and Guy Pepper all enter the match with relatively small cap totals, while Charlie Ewels offers more experience but has had fewer recent England appearances. George’s view is that clear preparation and role definition can turn that inexperience into energy rather than anxiety.
England’s selection picture is shaped partly by availability, with front-row depth reduced and Maro Itoje rested for the summer. That makes the performance of the replacements more than a tactical subplot: it could be central to how England manage the physical pressure late in the match.
South Africa also have some less-capped forwards among their own replacements, although their bench carries a strong reputation after the “Bomb Squad” became a major part of their recent success. For England, the final quarter may reveal whether this newer group is ready to narrow the gap against elite opposition.
