Pierre Gasly is back in third place in the Monaco Grand Prix after Alpine successfully challenged the pit-lane speeding penalties that had dropped him to seventh. Stewards accepted data showing he did not exceed the 60km/h pit-lane limit.
The review centred on how pit-lane speed was calculated. Alpine argued that changes to the pit lane meant the shortest route between timing loops was 77cm shorter than the distance officials had used, affecting the speed reading. The stewards agreed that this meant Gasly’s penalties should be removed.
The decision reshapes the race result and raises questions for other affected teams. Five drivers were penalised for pit-lane speeding, including George Russell, Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto. Russell’s race was especially affected after a drive-through penalty left him well down the order, while Hamilton’s second place was not changed.
The matter may not be over. McLaren and Red Bull have indicated they intend to appeal, and Mercedes has signalled it may explore possible remedies with the FIA, even while acknowledging the legal and timing hurdles involved.
