Joey Carbery is returning to Leinster before the 2026-27 season, with the province confirming the Ireland international’s comeback. The move brings the 30-year-old fly-half back to the club where he came through the academy system.
Carbery has 37 Ireland caps and previously made 37 senior appearances for Leinster, including during the province’s 2018 Pro14 and Champions Cup double-winning season. He later joined Munster, where he was part of the squad that won the United Rugby Championship in 2023.
His most recent spell was in France with Bordeaux-Begles, where he spent two seasons and added two Investec Champions Cup titles to his record. Leinster’s confirmation comes after Ciaran Frawley’s move to Connacht, adding another layer to the province’s reshaping at fly-half.
For Leinster, the return is both a squad move and a reunion with a player who knows the environment well. The key editorial question now is how quickly Carbery can re-establish himself in a competitive backline after time away from Irish provincial rugby.
