Nikola Jokic has indicated that his long-term preference is to remain with the Denver Nuggets, while choosing not to sign an extension immediately. ESPN reported that he plans to wait until next summer before completing a new deal.
The timing matters because Jokic is already under contract for two more seasons, with the final year carrying a player option. He has been eligible for a four-year maximum extension, but waiting until the 2027 offseason could put him in position for a longer and larger contract, according to ESPN’s reporting and Bobby Marks’ contract analysis.
For Denver, the situation appears more like a financial calendar question than a short-term alarm about Jokic’s commitment. Still, the Nuggets are navigating a quiet free-agency period, with Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones not yet agreed to new deals, Tyus Jones and Marvin Bagley III back on new contracts, and Tim Hardaway Jr. moving to Miami.
Jokic remains the center of the franchise’s competitive outlook after another elite season in which he finished second in MVP voting behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and averaged a triple-double. The larger concern for Denver is whether the roster around him can return to title contention after a first-round exit against Minnesota and no trip beyond the second round since the 2023 championship.
