Harry Kane scored both England goals as they beat DR Congo 2-1 in a World Cup last-32 tie in Atlanta. His late header and closing-stage right-footed finish turned a dangerous exit scenario into a place in the last 16 against Mexico.
England had been in serious trouble before Kane intervened, with DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi standing out through a series of saves. Anthony Gordon also changed the rhythm after coming on, supplying the pass for Kane’s decisive second goal and playing a key role in the comeback.
The performance adds another layer to Kane’s England record. The report credits him with five goals at this World Cup, 13 career World Cup goals, 84 for England, and 72 goals in 62 matches for club and country this season.
Thomas Tuchel’s side now move on to Mexico City, where the Azteca Stadium presents a different challenge: altitude, home support and a Mexico team with a strong competitive record there. England survived Atlanta because Kane delivered; the next question is whether they can produce a fuller team performance when the margin for error narrows.
