Ireland beat Australia 33-31 in Sydney, with Hugo Keenan playing a central role on his return to the national side. Back in the starting XV after a long absence, the full-back was named man of the match after influencing the game in defence and attack.
Keenan's key defensive moment came before half-time, when he stopped Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii close to the Irish line and helped prevent Australia from building a much larger lead. Soon after the break, he added Ireland's fourth try, finishing after Garry Ringrose created the opening.
His performance was especially notable because Ireland have been managing several absences, including Jack Crowley, Andrew Porter and captain Caelan Doris. Jamie Osborne's selection on the wing had drawn attention before kick-off, but Keenan's return to the No 15 shirt became one of the main stories of the match.
The wider question for Andy Farrell is how much Ireland can strengthen their squad depth during this Nations Championship run against Australia, Japan and New Zealand. With the World Cup approaching, displays from returning and fringe players may matter as much as the result itself.
