Scotland beat Argentina 47-38 in Cordoba without Finn Russell starting, as Tom Jordan and Fergus Burke both made strong cases at fly-half. The result leaves Gregor Townsend with a genuine selection call before facing South Africa.
Jordan started at 10 and Burke later came off the bench, with each kicking three conversions. Their control and variety were highlighted by former Scotland captain Lisa Martin, who saw signs that the team can operate effectively without relying solely on Russell’s more instinctive playmaking.
That does not make Russell a marginal figure. He remains one of Scotland’s central creative players, with 505 points in 94 appearances, but his calf issue and Scotland’s success in Argentina have opened the door to a different tactical approach. Former international Peter Wright suggested Jordan could start again, with Russell used later in the match if fit.
The South Africa fixture gives the debate extra weight. Scotland have previously struggled to find answers when the Springboks limited Russell’s influence, including at the 2023 World Cup, and Russell scored all of Scotland’s points in a 32-15 defeat at Murrayfield in November 2024.
Townsend can also take encouragement from the way Scotland handled momentum swings in Argentina, where seven different players scored tries. Against the world champions, the central question may not be whether Russell plays, but how Scotland balance his threat with the broader attacking options shown in Cordoba.
