The Lakers are reportedly adding Walker Kessler from the Jazz in a deal built around unprotected 2031 and 2033 first-round picks, plus swap rights in 2028 and 2030. ESPN also reports that Los Angeles has lined up agreements with Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton as part of a broader roster reshape.
Kessler is expected to give the Lakers a major interior presence if the trade is completed as reported. The 7-foot-2 center averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 2024-25, including a league-best 4.6 offensive rebounds per game, an area where Los Angeles badly needed help after ranking 29th in offensive boards last season.
The reported cost is significant. ESPN says Kessler is set for a four-year, $130 million contract with a fourth-year player option and full trade kicker, while Utah would receive two unprotected future firsts and two swaps. The source also notes that Kessler had previously declined a five-year offer from the Jazz worth roughly $140 million.
The supporting moves point to a deeper rotation overhaul. Mamukelashvili is reported to be getting four years and $52 million after a strong bench season in Toronto, Grimes four years and $60 million after averaging 13.3 points for Philadelphia, and Sexton two years and $19 million with a player option after averaging 15.4 points for Charlotte and Chicago.
Because the report is based on sources rather than official team announcements, the transaction details should remain under review. If confirmed, the key editorial question is whether the Lakers have found the right frontcourt partner for Luka Doncic or paid too much future draft capital to do it.
