The inquest into Maddy Cusack’s death has been adjourned again and is now scheduled to resume on 7 December. The delay followed the lodging of additional documents with the court, prompting the coroner to seek more evidence.
Cusack, a Sheffield United midfielder, died on 20 September 2023 at the age of 27. The hearing began on 29 June and had already heard eight full days of evidence before the latest adjournment changed the timetable for the coroner’s conclusions.
According to the court update, the coroner plans to recall former club doctor Dr Subhasis Basu and former physio Francesca Carr, and may seek further evidence from Cusack’s GP, Dr Mobeen Bhatti. The court also wants to hear from former assistant physio Sean Bowskill.
A key issue now concerns medical records. The coroner asked Sheffield United’s legal team to help with an audit of the women’s team medical-records system, and also intends to request NHS hospital records covering the period from August 2022 until Cusack’s death.
The case remains an active and sensitive inquest, with no final conclusions yet delivered. Editors should avoid drawing conclusions about responsibility or cause until the coroner has completed the process.
