The Dallas Mavericks have retained Moussa Cisse by matching the New York Knicks’ two-year, $4.7 million offer sheet for the restricted free agent center. The move keeps Cisse in Dallas after he had signed the Knicks’ offer earlier the same day.
Cisse, a 6-foot-11 center who turns 24 in September, joined the Mavericks on a two-way deal after going undrafted out of Memphis last summer. Dallas had extended him a qualifying offer this offseason, which allowed the team to match outside offers.
His role last season was limited but productive in short minutes: he averaged 4.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in just under 14 minutes per game. For Dallas, matching the sheet preserves frontcourt depth and keeps a developing rim-protection option in the building.
The contract details carry some important timing and trade restrictions. The reported salary protection changes if Cisse is not waived by Sept. 1, with the balance becoming guaranteed on Oct. 1; because the offer was matched, he cannot be traded for one year without his consent and cannot be dealt to the Knicks during that period.
