Micah Nori has been introduced as the Portland Trail Blazers’ head coach, ending a long wait for his first lead job after 28 years in the NBA. His arrival follows several head-coaching interviews in which he said teams viewed him as a strong finalist but chose someone else.
Nori comes to Portland after five seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves and a career that began as a Toronto Raptors intern in 1998. He has recently been connected to openings with the Knicks, Bulls and Lakers, and his brief in-game leadership role during Minnesota’s 2024 playoff run is part of the case for his readiness.
The hire comes with immediate expectations because Portland just returned to the playoffs under interim coach Tiago Splitter, finishing 42-40 before a first-round loss to San Antonio. Nori pointed to ball security and 3-point shooting as areas for improvement, with Damian Lillard’s expected return adding a major perimeter threat.
One unresolved talking point is the reported structure of Nori’s contract. ESPN says the deal includes only one guaranteed year, team options and incentives, but those details were attributed to sources rather than an official team release, so editors should treat that part cautiously.
