Jarell Quansah will miss England’s next two matches after FIFA imposed a two-game suspension for his red card in the 3-2 win over Mexico. The ban rules him out of the quarter-final against Norway and any semi-final, though he could return if England reach the final on 19 July.
The defender was dismissed in the 54th minute for a high challenge on Jesús Gallardo, with the incident treated as serious foul play. That classification meant FIFA added an extra match to the standard one-game suspension.
The Football Association looked at whether the decision could be challenged, but the tournament rules reportedly offer no appeal route. The FA nevertheless raised concerns with FIFA about the review process, arguing that the order in which the referee viewed still images, slow-motion footage and real-time replay may have influenced the outcome.
For Thomas Tuchel, the immediate issue is selection. Quansah had been covering at right-back while Reece James was absent with a hamstring problem, although Tuchel expects James to be available against Norway. Djed Spence, Ezri Konsa and Trevoh Chalobah are also part of the wider conversation, but each option comes with a different tactical trade-off.
The case also adds to debate around consistency in tournament discipline, after FIFA’s handling of Folarin Balogun’s red card drew criticism. For England, however, the practical question is simpler: who can provide enough security on the right side in a knockout match?
