Serena Williams’ first singles match since 2022 ended in defeat to Australia’s Maya Joint at Wimbledon, but the performance did not look like a simple farewell appearance. Naomi Broady’s BBC Sport column argued that Williams still showed enough quality to be a threat in future matches if she is physically able to continue.
The major concern is her knee. Williams picked up an issue at Wimbledon that also stopped a planned doubles outing with Venus Williams, and there has been no confirmed diagnosis or firm schedule for what comes next.
Broady’s analysis focused on what still looked sharp: the serve, the clean ball-striking and the timing that has defined Williams’ career. She also noted areas that may need match play to improve, including movement, footwork and how confidently Williams uses the court.
The North American hard-court swing could become the real test if Williams chooses to play it. Conditions in events such as Washington, Cincinnati and the US Open can be demanding, so any comeback will depend as much on recovery and repeat matches as on shot-making.
For now, the story is unresolved rather than finished. Williams has not publicly laid out a full plan, but her Wimbledon level gave Broady reason to believe opponents would not view her as an easy draw.
