Lewis Hamilton won the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix for Ferrari, his first victory since joining the team. Kimi Antonelli’s late retirement from second place and a virtual safety-car period were decisive in a race that changed shape in the closing stages.
Hamilton was on a different pit-stop plan from the Mercedes drivers, and the key moment came when Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin stopped, triggering a VSC. That allowed Hamilton to pit with less time loss, keep the lead and use fresher tyres to control the finish.
George Russell finished second for Mercedes, while Lando Norris took third for McLaren, completing an all-British podium. Antonelli had passed Russell shortly before his car stopped with an electrical issue, ending what had been a strong recovery fight for the championship leader.
The result cuts Hamilton’s gap to Antonelli to 41 points, with Russell now 50 points off the lead. Ferrari’s day was not perfect, however, as Charles Leclerc also retired after a power-steering problem, while Franco Colapinto’s post-race penalty reshuffled the lower end of the top 10.
For editors, the race offers several angles: Hamilton’s first Ferrari win, Mercedes’ missed opportunity, Antonelli’s first major setback of the season, and how a single VSC period can overturn a strategy battle.
