Patrick Ewing has reportedly agreed to join the Washington Wizards as an assistant coach under head coach Brian Keefe, according to ESPN sources. The move has not been presented in the supplied material as an official team announcement, so it should be treated as pending verification.
Ewing’s arrival would bring a major basketball figure back into a bench role after his recent ambassador position with the New York Knicks. ESPN’s report also says the Wizards see value in his stature and communication with both veteran stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young and a young group led by No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa.
The staff could also add another experienced voice, with ESPN reporting that Steve Clifford is expected to join Washington as a coaching advisor. Clifford and Ewing have worked together before, including stints in Orlando and Charlotte.
Ewing’s coaching résumé includes assistant roles with several NBA teams, including a previous stop with the Wizards, as well as a head-coaching run at Georgetown. His playing legacy remains closely tied to the Knicks, where he spent 15 seasons and later had his No. 33 retired.
