Andre Drummond has agreed to a one-year, $3.9 million deal with the New York Knicks, according to ESPN. The move gives New York a veteran center option after Mitchell Robinson’s reported move to Boston.
Robinson’s departure changes the Knicks’ frontcourt depth, especially after his rebounding and defense played a major role for New York. ESPN’s report links the roster shift to the team’s effort to avoid the NBA’s more restrictive second-apron luxury tax penalties.
Drummond’s fit is straightforward: he brings size, experience and a long track record on the glass. He has twice been an All-Star, led the league in rebounding four times, and spent the past two seasons in Philadelphia backing up Joel Embiid while averaging 6.8 points and 8.2 rebounds in 19.2 minutes across 103 games.
If the deal is finalized as reported, Drummond is expected to play behind Karl-Anthony Towns. For New York, the key question is whether his rebounding profile can help cover enough of what Robinson provided without changing the team’s wider financial plan.
