How Wimbledon’s heat rule works when temperatures climb

Wimbledon’s heat rule is triggered when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature reaches 30.1°C or above, allowing singles players a 10-minute break at a set point in the match. The rule is designed for player safety during periods of extreme heat.

The timing depends on the match format: in best-of-five singles, the break comes after the third set, while in best-of-three singles it comes after the second set. The rule can apply even after a match has begun, and only one player needs to ask for the break.

Players may leave the court during the heat break, but they cannot receive coaching or medical treatment in that window. Wimbledon checks WBGT readings before play and again at set times in the afternoon, using a measure that factors in air temperature, humidity and surface temperature.

Matches under the roofs are treated differently, with the heat rule not used there. Centre Court and No. 1 Court can use air conditioning once the roofs are closed, with systems intended to reduce temperature, manage humidity and avoid interfering with play.
